How to Convey Your Pronoun of Choice At A New Job

How to Convey Your Pronoun of Choice At A New Job Society is starting to finally recognize that gender is a non-binary spectrum, which means that were not relegated to just male or female. Many of us choose to identify with non-traditional pronouns, gender-neutral pronouns, multiple pronouns or no pronouns at all.Approximately 1.4 million Americans identify as transgender, and a reported 12 percent of millennials identified as something other than male or female, according to a March 2017 study. In a 2015 national survey, some 33 percent of transgender individuals said that, if permitted the choice, they would prefer not to be assigned either gender designation. But, when starting a new job, it can be uncomfortable to share ones pronouns with a new employer who might make assumptions or, worse, discriminate. Non-binary workers have reported feeling pressure at their jobs when it comes to their lack of gender designation 23 percent of those polled by The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law said that they purposefully hid their non-binary position at the workplace. And, of those who chose to go public, alfruchtwein 20 percent believed to have lost a job because of their status and 90 percent believed to have suffered some form of job bias, discrimination or harassment. What Are My Pronouns? You may use whatever pronouns you wish. Many people use the following pronouns, according to The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukees Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource CenterPhoto via The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukees Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource CenterSome people choose to switch hir(s) and hirself with zir and zirself, as well. What does zie and zir mean? Like (f)ae and (f)aer, they are neo-pronouns, so they are gender neutral. How to Share Your PronounsSo how do you have that conversation with your new boss? I asked individuals who use non-traditional pronouns to share how theyve shared theirs in previous jobs. Heres what they had to say. 1. Be Your Own AdvocateIve been out as non-binary for more than 10 years, around eight of them openly non-binary in the workplace, says Jordan, who asked that I only use their first name. I work in non-profit absatzwirtschaft and I use they/them pronouns. Notably, I live and work in New York City, where the law protects transgender and gender non-conforming employees. Workplaces in NYC are not allowed to discriminate against employees based on gender identity or expression, and intentional or repeated misgendering is explicitly categorized as harassment. Despite these laws, Ive had a very difficult time navigating pronouns in the workplace, and know that non-binary people living places without legal protection often face far worse situations. They have worked at three full-time jobs since graduating college and, at each one, put a lot of effort into communicating their pronouns. At each job, they said that there was no formal process in place for communicating gender identity or pron ouns, so they had to pave their own path and advocate for themselves. In the absence of policy, they said theyve had one-on-one conversations with managers, and then informed other staff through either email or bringing up their pronouns at group meetings.Generally, my experiences with individuals have been overwhelmingly positive, they said. Most colleagues are more than happy to respect me and my gender identity, and quickly adjust to the new language. I find that most people are genuinely happy to be respectful and to learn about a topic they may not have previously had exposure to.However, they have also consistently come across problems with their pronouns not being respected by certain individuals. At one workplace (working for an LGBT organization, no less), the lead rabbi consistently misgendered them for years, and the organization refused to update their paperwork and documentation, even after their name was legally changed. At another workplace, after informing staff of t heir pronouns through email, they were chastised by management for giving people the directive of using their pronouns, and told that no one is required to use their pronouns, in direct conflict with the law.The undercurrent of my experiences is that, while many people are accepting, that can be overshadowed by one or two transphobic people, and that policies and procedures are necessary to create stahlkammer work environments for non-binary people, they said. Had any of the offices I worked at had policies or training for staff, or even simply communicated the law and their expectation that staff use my pronouns, it would have gone a long ways towards making me feel safe and affirmed in the workplace.2. Make it Known That Your Pronouns Are Not Necessarily Just a PreferenceMy pronouns are she/her(s), says Alison Carville of Carville Communication Consulting. I do identify as a cisgender female. In my life and times I was looking for employment, no one has had to guess or risk mis-ge ndering me. But I have many friends who identify as genderfluid and transgender. Many find the term preferred pronouns to be misleading, as the word preferred means you like something better than another. Its like preferring beef to chicken, if you eat meat.Pronouns are personal, and trans* and genderfluid individuals have the right to be called by their pronouns, not as a preference. My intention is to come across as sincere, and take some burden off of trans*-identified people to let people know how unintentionally harming word choice can be.3. Be Open from the StartIve realized that most people are respectful of my pronouns (she/her/hers) and dont want to make me feel uncomfortable, its just that most of us are wired to assume someones pronouns based on the way they look, says Bethany, a transgender woman still going through her transition. I find that if Im open and honest from the start, the genuine people around me will make the effort to call me by the pronouns that reflect w ho I am, and they are happy to do so. I usually just casually say, Hey, by the way, these are my pronouns and I appreciate if you use them when referring to me, as soon as Im introduced to someone new.For those who make no effort, she says she tries to keep their working relationship as cordial as possible, but she also tries not to let their ignorance affect her or her work.Ive been fortunate enough to have never worked for an employer who didnt respect my gender identity, though I have run into some colleagues who seemed quite careless about it, she says.4. Share in Different WaysI share my pronouns in a variety of locations under my name, on their own line, on my CV and the same in all headings or signatures on documents such as cover or recommendation letters, says An Sasaia, a PhD student in trans*/queer studies who serves on the board of KSTEP, the Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project. I remind my advisors which pronouns to use in their letters, and I often include r eferences to my non-binary gender and pronouns in the letter with a statement such as, As a nonbinary instructor, who uses the pronouns they/them and ze/zir, and so on.Sasaia also mentions them early on in conversations and interviews by asking for a pronoun exchange, they say.5. Be Confident in Who You AreI always just tell them straight away, My name is Brenna and I use the pronouns they/them/theirs, and then I ask them for their pronouns so I make sure not to assume either if I dont want people to assume my identity, I want to give them the same respect, says Brenna, a New York-based queer rights activist who uses the pronouns they/them/theirs.That said, they admit that there will always be people who slip up and that there will always be people who ignore others pronouns, but you have to keep confident in who you are.If you find that there are constantly coworkers or managers ignoring your pronoun requests, it may constitute as discrimination in the workplace, they say. I perso nally dont agree that we should have to quit and find a new job, because the burden shouldnt be ours, but if you feel uncomfortable you should report it to HR and try to do something about it. This is who you are, and thats a big deal. Dont let it fall to the wayside. Be confident in your pursuit of equality.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solo travel. The Importance of Knowing your Roleand When to Leave It

The Importance of Knowing your Roleand When to Leave It Theres a statistic that the average person stays at each of his/her jobs for 4.4 years. And theres another one that says for 91 percent of Millennials, this average job duration is cut down to less than three years. And according to Justin Wolfers, a University of Michigan economist, this isnt such a bad idea. In a Business Insider article, he saysApproach your career ambitions the same way you approached your romantic ambitions at college. Sure, youre looking for The One, but the only way to find that is by going on a lot of dates. And you should think about your first job as a good first date. Try it out. If you like it, stick around for another year. But if not, ask another employer out. And keep playing the field until youve found the job you want to stay with. This pattern of hopping between jobs while young, before settling down, is in r emarkably common. And it makes sense, too. Romantic success never follows from trying to improve your partner it follows from moving on and finding a better match. The same is true in the world of work.Indeed, economic research shows that most large pay gains come not from your boss promoting you, but rather from moving to a job thats a better fit, with a different employer. If we take Wolfers advice, then 1) its important to first know and understand your role within a company, which then 2) will help you know and understand when its time to jump ship. So, just how do we do this?EvaluateTake some to seriously evaluate the position you currently hold. How many years have you worked there? Has there been any career development or forward progression? Any promotions, added skills or expertise? If youre able to access this information, look at the original job posting (description) you applied to. Do the duties, requirements and even future promises (as far as pay increases, promotions, etc. if offered) reflect the actual role? Are you really responsible for XYZ assignments or was this simply added as a filler to enhance the job description?Setting aside time to really evaluate what you do and how that impacts (or not) the company you work for is important to understanding the value you and your role have with that organization. Are you a key player on your team? If not, does the role provide opportunities for you to advance toward this?AssessMake an assessment of your goals and motivations. What were the initial reasons you applied for this position? What did you hope to gain from joining this company, and have you achieved those goals? If not, do you landsee plausible potential that you can and will? You also need to assess your passions at this point. Has anything changed since working in this position? Have you discovered new passions and desires youd like to pursue, and if so, will staying in your current position and with your current employer help guide you d own those paths? Likewise, maybe as youve worked in this role over time you have discovered you dont actually like XYZ like you initially assumed. Maybe after writing that 100th press release, your dreams of running your own PR firm have fizzled and youve realized PR is not truly your passion. Or perhaps you dont enjoy recruiting as much as youd hoped to.Assessing your current stance in relation to where you planned to be at this point and your motivations behind this will also help clarify whether or not your current position is truly benefiting your future.Take ActionAfter fully understanding your current role, value within your company, and its possible benefits and setbacks for your future, its time to take action. So many people become complacent in their careers and on the job. If after evaluating your overall situation you discover that its actually beneficial to step out of your current rolestep out of it. Dont be afraid to follow after what your heart truly desires (after y ouve secured a new position, of course). How miserable to know that your current position doesnt allow you to utilize your full potential, yet youll allow fear to keep you from pursuing your true passions? Dont become complacent in your career endeavors and settle for a role that doesnt offer advancement opportunities or doesnt ultimately steer you in the direction of accomplishing your future goals.

7 ways to stay hydrated during the day even if you hate water

7 ways to stay hydrated during the day even if you hate water7 ways to stay hydrated during the day even if you hate waterYes, I get it. Water is super important. Theres just one problem. I have never liked it. When I watch people down a giant glass of water at a restaurant I sit back in amazement. I mean, its just so boring. No flavor, no bubbles, no color? No thank you. But the problem is, humans apparently really need water. Yes, I have known this since I was like 5-years-old but I took the whole 8 cups a day as more of a suggestion (plus, whose got the time for that?) Well, I learned this the hard way when I recently went to the hospital for dehydration after spending the day running around and working out in the hot Miami sun and mostly drinking diet soda (maybe a few sips of water during my spin class.) In other definitivs, I was screwed. Our brain is made up of 73% water so if you arent getting enough water, you aint functioning. Forget focus, alertness and productivity at work ,you could end up with a fever, fainting and or having dangerously low blood pressure. Plus, your brain actually shrinks when you dont drink water and I dont mean in the good $150 an hour therapist on Park Ave way. I mean you are literally losing brain volume. One study even equated a dehydrated brain to driving a vehicle while drunk because your reaction times are so slowed. Whoa.In other words, if you dont drink enough you can also find yourself in a Miami ER at 2 AM trying to explain your diet choice of four Diet Dr. Peppers and Pixie Stix to a doctor. So now I am at least trying to make an effort to drink more throughout the day, especially during these very rough summer heat waves. It is hard but Ive found a few things do work.1. Get a cool water bottleAt the end of the day, something shiny always makes things better. So many stores and companies sell fun water bottles now. Get one with a fun slogan like This may be coffee or is it wine? No, its water.2. Add some flavorOK, yes, plain water is best but a little lemon wont hurt you or you could put a Liquid IV packet in it. It hydrates you faster and gives the water a little flavor.3. Have a saladWait, what? But some fruits and vegetables consist mainly of water (an apple has 85%.) Leafy greens are also a great source of water plus you are getting vitamins and nutrients.4. Drink some teaThis one works for me because the word tea doesnt sound anything like water even though it is just a hot cup of flavored water. Plus it is full ofantioxidants and phytochemicals.5. Try a fruit waterOK so on the days when I really cant do the water I drink WTRMLN WTR. First of all, anything Beyonce drinks, Im all about. Secondly, it is delicious. And like the fruit watermelon, it is full of nutrients, vitamins and electrolytes (550mg of potassium), Citrulline and Lycopene (for muscle health andantioxidants). It is ideal for staving off dehydration. Coconut water is also great.6. Drink other beveragesMilk, juice, tea and sparkl ing water all will at least help you stay hydrated. And believe it or not, coffee does not dehydrate you.In a healthy body, its very unlikely that a few cups of coffee are the cause of your dull skin, or headaches, or overall feeling of dryness- at least, not through the mechanism of dehydration,Jennifer Haythe, M.D., a cardiologist and internist at Columbia University toldMarieClaire.com.7. IV TherapyIV Therapy is the latest health trend and like a regular IV it will pack you full of vitamins and nutrients as well as keep you hydrated. Just be ready to shell out some dough.

Video Past President Donald E Marlowe and ASMEs DC Efforts

Video Past President Donald E Marlowe and ASMEs DC Efforts Video Past President Donald E Marlowe and ASMEs DC Efforts Video Past President Donald E. Marlowe and ASMEs DC EffortsDonald E. Marlowe, the 88th President of ASME, served his term in 1969-70. Among the topics he addressed in his wide-ranging Oral History interview (recorded in 1993) was ASMEs establishment of its office in Washington D.C. Marlowe had long been a believer in the importance of technical expertise to national policymaking, as well in the need for the Society to serve as a voice on behalf of the profession of engineering in Washington. Marlowes presidency afforded him a gelegenheit to lead ASME toward the creation of a D.C. office whence such efforts could be pursued.Marlowes presidency took place at a time of major change for ASME. Preparations for an overarching Goals Conference, to help chart a wholly new direction for the Society, were already underway as he entered office. The ASME Goals Conferencewell-know n to members then as Arden House after the meeting center where the two-day discussion took placeformulated an enlarged agenda for the Society, among whose top items was a much enhanced approach to and interaction with government. In order to make such efforts possible at the national level, Marlowe pushed for the establishment of an ASME office in Washington, D.C. The proposal was accepted by ASMEs membership, and by 1972, The ASME Washington Office was open for business.Read more about ASMEs Oral History with Donald E.
